This practical and comprehensive 2-day course integrates anatomy, biomechanics neurology, manual therapy, and exercise physiology. Treating the lumbar spine is a challenge for many clinicians due to its complexity, and lack of understanding of its functional relationship to the thoracic spine cranially, sacrum, SIJ, hips, and lower extremities.

Integrates science fundamentals and evidence-based knowledge into practical applications. During this course, the instructor will discuss the relevance of integrating the Thoracic, lumbar, and hip joints in the assessment and treatment of the spine. A discussion and demonstration of practical evaluation, progressive approach to training the lumbar spine, starting with segmental deep lumbar rotator muscle group recruitment, and culminating in stability during functional mobility and return to sports. Fundamental segmental strategies to initiate recruitment using manual strategies, tactile input, muscle dynamics, and exercise principles to improve function.

The instructor will introduce exercise strategies that are progressive from NWB to full weight bearing and return to sports. Also, he will discuss pulley concepts for recruitment, and demonstrate home exercise strategies designed to maintain the gains made in the clinic. The participants will be able to take the knowledge learned in this two-day course and apply it immediately to their patients and clients. This course is 30% lecture and 70% hands-on lab.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy (osseous and ligamentous) of the lumbar spine.
  • Describe the muscles and neurology of the Lumbar spine.
  • Describe the biomechanics of the lumbar spine.
  • Discuss the manual Therapy lesion
  • Discuss and evaluate components of lumbar instability.
  • Perform evaluation and segmental mobility testing of the lumbar spine.
  • Perform Dynamic Soft Tissue Mobilization of the lumbar spine.
  • Perform a limited functional screening of the Lumbar spine.
  • Perform isolated testing for key muscles contributing to lumbar stability.
  • Perform treatment progression from unstable segment to functional stability.

  • Discuss lumbar stabilization exercises progression.
  • Discuss the progression of concentric and eccentric exercise progression.
  • Discuss positional progression for optimal muscle recruitment.

About the Instructor

Yousef Ghandour DPT, MOMT, FAAOMPT has been practicing as a Physical Therapist for over 38 years. Dr. Ghandour graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Long Beach University. He earned his post-graduate degree in Masters of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (MOMT) in 1991, from the Ola Grimsby Institute in San Diego, CA. Completed an additional two years part-II residency program and became a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (FAAOMPT – FF0011) in 1994.

Dr. Ghandour served on the faculty and board of the Ola Grimsby Institute for over 26 years and had the honor of being mentored by Dr. Ola Grimsby personally. He taught many short-term courses, and part-time residency programs and contributed to many course contents. Currently, he has been a faculty member at the University of St. Augustine since 2017.

He continued his studies to earn his doctorate in Physical Therapy with an emphasis on executive leadership from the University of St. Augustine in 2021.  Dr. Ghandour is the recipient of the “Force for Good “award from the University of St. Augustine in December 2022 and received his Associate Fellow status from the Scoliosis Research Society (AF-SRS) 2019. He is certified in Scientific Exercises Approach to Scoliosis management (SEAS) and currently, he is a full-time practicing clinician.

Dr. Ghandour is passionate about Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy, enjoys sharing his knowledge with his colleagues, and is a contributing member of several physical therapy organizations including:

  • American Physical Therapy Association.
  • The California State Physical Therapy Association,
  • Orthopedic Section of the APTA,
  • California Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy – SIG (COMPT- sig)
  • Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (FAAOMPT),
